History Of Washington Federal Bank For Savings
Washington Federal Bank For Savings was established on January 1, 1913, originally named the Washington Savings and Loan Association of Chicago. Over the years, it underwent multiple name and regulatory changes; on July 22, 1993, it changed its name to Washington Savings Bank and converted to a mutual savings bank. The institution became Washington Federal Bank on October 21, 1994, and switched its regulatory oversight to the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS). A subsequent name change on March 1, 1995, rebranded the bank as Washington Federal Bank For Savings, reflecting its evolution into a stock savings bank. On July 21, 2011, the primary federal regulatory agency changed from OTS to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. However, the bank ultimately failed on December 15, 2017, necessitating a merger with government financial assistance to address its insolvency.
