WaFd Bank, originally established as Washington Federal Savings and Loan Association on January 1, 1917, has undergone significant changes and expansions throughout its history. The bank was rebranded several times, adopting the name Washington Federal in July 2011 and later Washington Federal Bank, National Association in April 2019. In February 2022, the institution transitioned to a state-chartered bank and withdrew from membership in the Federal Reserve System, subsequently changing its primary federal regulatory agency to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Over the years, WaFd Bank has grown through various acquisitions, including notable institutions such as Horizon Bank in Bellingham, Washington, First Federal Bank in Roswell, New Mexico, and South Valley Bank & Trust in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
