United Bank is a financial institution that was established on May 10, 1979, originally under the name The George Mason Bank. In the years following its inception, the bank expanded its services and footprint through a series of acquisitions. Significant milestones include the acquisition of The Washington Bank in Falls Church, Virginia, in September 1992, and the transition to full trust powers in May 1997. Later that year, on June 7, 1997, United Bank acquired George Mason Bank, National Association in Bethesda, Maryland. On April 18, 1998, the bank changed its name to United Bank after acquiring another bank of the same name located in Arlington County, Virginia. The bank continued its growth trajectory with several acquisitions throughout the 2000s, including Sequoia Bank in Bethesda, Maryland, in October 2003 and Rockingham Heritage Bank in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in July 2007. In 2014, United Bank further expanded by acquiring Virginia Commerce Bank in Arlington, Virginia. Additional acquisitions included Bank of Georgetown in Washington, D.C., in June 2016, and Cardinal Bank in McLean, Virginia, in April 2017. The bank acquired the original United Bank in Parkersburg, West Virginia, on November 11, 2017. In 2020, United Bank acquired CresCom Bank in Charleston, South Carolina, and relocated its main office to Fairfax Boulevard in Fairfax, Virginia. Most recently, on December 4, 2021, United Bank acquired Essex Bank in Richmond, Virginia.
