The State Bank and Trust Company, originally established as The State Bank of Defiance Company on March 28, 1902, has undergone several changes throughout its history. In 1943, the bank became a member of the Federal Reserve System, changing its classification to a state-chartered bank and designating the Federal Reserve as its primary regulatory agency. In 1956, it adopted the name The State Bank and Trust Company. Over the years, the institution has expanded through various acquisitions, including the purchase of The Oakwood Deposit Bank Company in Oakwood, Ohio, in 2002, and the National Bank of Montpelier in Montpelier, Ohio, in 2008. In March 2007, it transitioned to full trust powers after acquiring Reliance Financial Services, National Association in Defiance, Ohio, and The Exchange Bank in Luckey, Ohio. The name was simplified to State Bank in April 2013 before reverting to The State Bank and Trust Company later that year.
