Over the years, the bank underwent several mergers with larger banking institutions. On November 14, 2015, it merged with Chemical Bank, based in Midland, Michigan. This was followed by another merger on August 1, 2019, when it became part of TCF National Bank headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The bank's final merger occurred on June 9, 2021, when it became part of The Huntington National Bank located in Columbus, Ohio. Notably, in 2005, the main office of The Bank of Northern Michigan moved to 406 Bay Street in Petoskey, Michigan.
