History Of The Bank of New York Mellon

The Bank of New York Mellon, established in 1851 as the Irving Trust Company, has undergone significant transformations throughout its history. In 1989, it changed its name to The Bank of New York and relocated its main office to 48 Wall Street, New York City. Notable acquisitions during this period included the purchase of The Bank of New York in New York City and Nanuet National Bank in Nanuet, New York, among others. The bank continued to expand through various acquisitions in the 1990s, including The Bank of New York in West Paterson, New Jersey, and The Putnam Trust Company in Greenwich, Connecticut. In 2008, it merged with Mellon Financial Corporation, at which point it adopted the name The Bank of New York Mellon. That year also marked the acquisition of several entities, including The Dreyfus Trust Company and Mellon Securities Trust Company, and the main office was relocated to One Wall Street, New York City. Subsequently, the main office was moved to 225 Liberty Street in 2015 and then to 240 Greenwich Street in 2018.
