History Of TD Bank
TD Bank, National Association, was established in 1852 under the name Penobscot Savings Bank in Maine. Over the years, the institution underwent several name changes and expansions through a series of acquisitions. In 1982, it became Heritage Savings Bank after acquiring several local banks, and it adopted the name Peoples Heritage Savings Bank in 1985. The bank transitioned to a commercial bank in June 2000 and changed its name to BankNorth, National Association. Subsequent expansion included significant acquisitions such as Atlantic Bank National Association in 1997 and multiple Florida banks in 2010 as part of government-assisted mergers. The bank rebranded as TD Bank, National Association in 2008 following a series of acquisitions that included Commerce Bank in Philadelphia and New Jersey. More recent acquisitions include Scottrade Bank in 2017. Today, TD Bank operates as a member of the Federal Reserve System, continuing its legacy of growth and regional service.
