Sunwest Bank, originally established as Santiago Bank on April 9, 1970, underwent several name changes and relocations throughout its history. The institution changed its name to Santiago Commercial Bank on December 4, 1972, and later adopted the name Santiago Bank on April 26, 1973. In 1980, it rebranded as Sunwest Bank. Over the years, the bank expanded its operations by acquiring several other financial institutions, particularly during the financial crisis of the late 2000s. Notably, in 2009, Sunwest Bank acquired MetroPacific Bank in Irvine, California, First State Bank in Flagstaff, Arizona, and Pacific Coast National Bank in San Clemente, California, all as part of government-assisted mergers.
