Sunrise Bank Dakota, originally established as The Onida Bank in 1925, has undergone several changes in its regulatory status and institutional identity over the years. On September 8, 1941, the bank became a member of the Federal Reserve System and changed its classification to a state-chartered bank under the regulation of the Federal Reserve. Following this, on June 1, 2005, the bank withdrew from the Federal Reserve System, changing its primary federal regulatory agency to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and reclassifying itself as a state-chartered bank not a member of the Federal Reserve System. On the same date, the bank's name was officially changed to Sunrise Bank Dakota. Additionally, on September 5, 2001, the main office was relocated to 201 South Main Street in Onida, South Dakota.
