Southwest State Bank was established on April 4, 1911, under the original name of The First National Bank of Sentinel. Over the years, the institution underwent several changes, notably on July 1, 1970, when it changed its name to Southwest State Bank and transitioned to state chartering while withdrawing from membership in the Federal Reserve System.
