History Of Southwest Georgia Bank

Southwest Georgia Bank, originally established as Moultrie National Bank on January 3, 1928, underwent several name changes and acquisitions throughout its history. On October 1, 1994, the institution changed its name to Southwest Georgia Bank, National Association, and subsequently to Southwest Georgia Bank on the same day. It transitioned its primary federal regulatory agency to the Federal Reserve and acquired Baker County Bank in Newton, Georgia, on December 2, 1994, and Moultrie Savings Bank, F.S.B., in Moultrie, Georgia, on January 4, 1991. In a significant structural change on August 1, 2003, the bank withdrew from membership in the Federal Reserve System, changed its bank class to a state-chartered bank, and designated the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as its primary regulatory agency. The bank continued its growth by acquiring Sylvester Banking Company in Sylvester, Georgia, on February 28, 2004. On April 3, 2020, Southwest Georgia Bank merged with The First, a National Banking Association based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Finally, the institution rebranded as The First Bank on January 15, 2022, marking the end of the Southwest Georgia Bank name in its operations.
