SouthFirst Bank was established on October 18, 1949, originally named First Federal Savings and Loan Association. Over the years, it underwent several name changes, including becoming First Federal of the South on February 13, 1995, when it also changed its organization type to Stock Savings & Loan. The institution expanded through acquisitions, notably acquiring First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Chilton County in Clanton, Alabama, on October 31, 1997. In 2005, it adopted the name SouthFirst Bank. The bank's regulatory oversight transitioned to The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on July 21, 2011, and in 2008 it changed its trust powers to none. On April 15, 2021, SouthFirst Bank changed its name to First Bank of Alabama and merged with First Bank of Alabama in Talladega, Alabama.
