History Of Southern Bank

Southern Bank, originally established as the Bank of Mount Olive in 1901, has undergone significant changes and expansions throughout its history. In 1967, the institution changed its name to Southern Bank and Trust Company, reflecting its broader regional presence. The bank continued to expand through a series of acquisitions, including Merchants & Farmers Bank in Macclesfield, North Carolina, in 1973, and Tarheel Bank & Trust Company in Gatesville, North Carolina, in 1986. The bank further solidified its growth by acquiring Citizens Savings Bank, Inc. in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, in 1993, and Enfield Savings Bank, Inc. SSB in Enfield, North Carolina, in 1998. In 2011, Southern Bank acquired the Bank of the Commonwealth in Norfolk, Virginia, through a government-assisted merger. Subsequent acquisitions included The Heritage Bank in Lucama, North Carolina, in 2013, and Heritage Bank in Norfolk, Virginia, in 2016. The main office has also relocated twice, first in 1990 and then again in 1996, both to North Center Street in Mount Olive, North Carolina.
