PlainsCapital Bank, originally established as The Plains National Bank of Lubbock on September 15, 1955, has undergone several name changes and acquisitions throughout its history. In 1994, it became The Plains National Bank of West Texas, and in 1998, it further changed its name to Plains National Bank. In September 1999, the institution adopted the name Pnb Financial Bank and switched its primary federal regulatory agency to the Federal Reserve. The name PlainsCapital Bank was officially adopted on October 6, 2003, following the acquisition of Whisperwood National Bank in Lubbock, Texas, earlier that same year. This growth continued with significant acquisitions, including City National Bank in Austin, Texas, in January 2001, and First National Bank in Edinburg, Texas, in September 2013. PlainsCapital Bank also acquired Southwest Securities, FSB in Dallas, Texas, in January 2015, and The Bank of River Oaks in Houston, Texas, in August 2018.
