Independent Bank, originally established in 1890 as Mutual Savings and Loan Association, has undergone numerous transformations and acquisitions throughout its history. The institution transitioned to various names, becoming Mutual Savings Bank, F.S.B. in the 1990s before officially adopting the name Independent Bank on September 14, 2001. In the following years, the bank expanded its footprint through strategic acquisitions, including Independent Bank - South Michigan and Independent Bank East Michigan, both in September 2007, and Traverse City State Bank in Traverse City, Michigan, in April 2018. The bank's regulatory landscape also evolved; it changed from being federally insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to becoming a member of the Federal Reserve System in 2007.
