History Of Hudson City Savings Bank

Hudson City Savings Bank was established on March 27, 1868. Originally founded under this name, the bank underwent significant changes throughout its history. On November 30, 1970, it acquired The Fifth Ward Savings Bank in Jersey City, New Jersey, marking the beginning of its expansion through mergers and acquisitions. During the 1980s, the bank continued its growth by acquiring the United States Savings Bank of Newark, New Jersey, on March 12, 1982, and Orange Savings Bank in Livingston, New Jersey, on September 29, 1984. The bank moved its main office to West 80 Century Road, Paramus, New Jersey, on May 14, 1982. Over the years, Hudson City Savings Bank changed its regulatory and organizational structure, including transitioning to a Stock Savings Bank in 1999 and later to a Federal Savings Bank in 2004. The bank acquired Sound Federal Savings in White Plains, New York, on July 14, 2006. Its primary federal regulatory agency changed to The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on July 21, 2011. Ultimately, Hudson City Savings Bank merged with Manufacturers and Traders Trust Company on November 1, 2015, becoming part of this larger financial institution based in Buffalo, New York.
