History Of Heritage Bank of the South

Heritage Bank of the South was established on December 31, 1979, originally as Albany Government Employees Federal Credit Union. The institution underwent several name changes and structural transformations over the years, becoming Age Federal Credit Union on September 19, 1995. On July 2, 2001, the institution rebranded as Heritage Bank of the South and transitioned to a Federal Savings Bank structure while becoming FDIC insured. The bank's main office was relocated in Albany, Georgia, to various addresses, with significant moves occurring in June 2002 and January 2003. In its efforts to expand, Heritage Bank of the South acquired several other banks, including Citizens Bank of Effingham and First Southern National Bank in 2011, as well as Frontier Bank in 2013, all through government-assisted mergers. The bank continued its growth strategy by acquiring Alarion Bank in 2014 and was ultimately merged into Renasant Bank based in Tupelo, Mississippi, on July 1, 2015.
