Greater State Bank, originally established as Greater South Texas Savings Association on January 1, 1974, underwent several name and structural changes throughout its history. The institution transitioned to a federal savings bank, being renamed Greater South Texas Savings Bank, FSB on March 29, 1995, and then continued its evolution with a name change to Greater South Texas Bank on September 13, 2004. That same year, the bank altered its organizational structure and regulatory status, becoming a state-chartered commercial bank under the supervision of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
