Great Southern Bank, originally established as the Bank of Quitman on March 2, 1902, has undergone several name changes and organizational shifts throughout its history. The institution became Great Southern National Bank on June 24, 1981, and switched its chartering agency to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, simultaneously becoming a member of the Federal Reserve System. Over the years, Great Southern Bank expanded through acquisitions, including the Bank of Hattiesburg and the Bank of Jackson in October 1981, and the First National Bank of Waynesboro in October 1980. The bank's main office has moved several times, with significant relocations to Jackson, Mississippi, in the early 1980s and to Meridian, Mississippi, in 1988 and again in 2006.
