HISTORY OF FIRSTMERIT BANK

FirstMerit Bank was established on October 9, 1890, originally named The First-Central Trust Company. Over the years, the institution underwent several name changes and regulatory shifts, becoming a National Bank and a member of the Federal Reserve System in April 1947. In July 1985, it changed its name to First National Bank of Ohio before rebranding to FirstMerit Bank, National Association, in September 1997. The bank expanded significantly through numerous acquisitions, including Citizens National Bank in Canton, Ohio, and several others in the late 1990s and early 2000s, such as Security Federal Savings and Loan Association of Cleveland and First Federal Savings Bank of Kent. Notably, it acquired Citizens Bank in Flint, Michigan, in April 2013, as well as Midwest Bank and Trust Company and George Washington Savings Bank in 2010 through government-assisted mergers. On August 16, 2016, FirstMerit Bank merged with The Huntington National Bank, marking the end of its operations as an independent entity.
