First National Bank was established on January 1, 1934, originally named First National Bank in Pierre, South Dakota. Over the decades, the bank underwent several significant changes, including its first major acquisition in 1983 when it purchased Miners and Merchants Bank in Lead, South Dakota. In 1985, it changed its name to First National Bank and moved its main office to Main Street in Pierre, South Dakota, and subsequently acquired The Frontier Bank in Murdo, South Dakota, later that year. The bank continued to expand through acquisitions, including the First State Bank of McLaughlin in 1989 and Security Bank of South Dakota, National Association in 1992, both located in South Dakota. In 2003, it acquired Arapahoe Bank and Trust in Englewood, Colorado. The main office relocated in 2000 to 119 North Deadwood Street, Pierre, South Dakota, and again in 2007 to 307 E Hustan Avenue, Fort Pierre, South Dakota.
