History Of First Merchants Bank
First Merchants Bank, originally established as The Merchants National Bank of Muncie on March 13, 1893, underwent significant transformations throughout its history. The bank relocated its main office to 200 East Jackson Street in Muncie, Indiana, on August 10, 1972. In December 1991, it rebranded as First Merchants Bank National Association. In 2016, it evolved further by changing its name to First Merchants Bank and transitioned to a state-chartered bank, no longer a member of the Federal Reserve System, while also changing its primary federal regulatory agency to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The bank has a history of expansion through numerous acquisitions, including the purchase of Ameriana Bank in New Castle, Indiana, in December 2015; Community Bank in Noblesville, Indiana, in November 2014; and Monroe Bank & Trust in Monroe, Michigan, in September 2019, among others. Most recently, on April 1, 2022, First Merchants Bank acquired Level One Bank in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
