First Farmers & Merchants State Bank, originally established as the State Bank of Brownsdale on February 8, 1908, has undergone several name changes and relocations throughout its history. In 1969, the institution changed its name to First American State Bank of Brownsdale. The bank further modified its name to First American State Bank in 1988 following the acquisition of First American State Bank of Sargeant, Minnesota, on January 1 of that year. Subsequently, in 1989, the main office was relocated to Main Street in Brownsdale, Minnesota. On December 8, 1993, the bank adopted its current name, First Farmers & Merchants State Bank.
