In 1978, it became known as The First National Bank of Talladega, and subsequently, on June 15, 2015, the institution adopted the name First Bank of Alabama. This name change coincided with a series of regulatory changes, including a transition to a state-chartered bank and withdrawal from the Federal Reserve System, with the primary federal regulatory agency changed to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The bank expanded its operations by acquiring Bank of Wedowee in October 2017 and SouthFirst Bank in April 2021.
