Farmers State Bank was established on January 1, 1925, originally under the name Farmers & Merchants State Bank. The bank underwent several name changes and acquisitions throughout its history, including a notable name change to Farmers & Merchants State Bank on January 31, 2009, before adopting the name Farmers State Bank on October 1, 2010. On the same date, Farmers State Bank acquired another institution located in Stickney, South Dakota, and subsequently moved its main office to 221 Main Street, Stickney, South Dakota. In a series of expansions, the bank also acquired Farmers State Bank of Carthage, South Dakota, on April 10, 1986, and relocated its main office to 201 Ottowa Street in Iroquois, South Dakota, on April 20, 1990. Ultimately, on July 1, 2018, Farmers State Bank merged with American Bank & Trust in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, marking the end of its independent operation.
