Farmers State Bank was established on October 1, 1919, under its original name in Ludell, Kansas. Over the years, the bank underwent several significant changes, including a relocation of its main office to Main Street in Ludell in 1989. On October 12, 2001, the main office was moved again to 411 Page Street in Atwood, Kansas. On July 11, 2015, Farmers State Bank merged with Almena State Bank in Almena, Kansas. The institution continued to operate until it ultimately failed on October 23, 2020, after which it merged with government financial assistance.
