In a strategic expansion, the bank acquired First Merchants Bank located in Thomasville, Georgia, on January 16, 1998. After a period of growth and restructuring, Farmers & Merchants Bank ultimately merged with The First, A National Banking Association, on October 31, 2018, based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Following this merger, on January 15, 2022, the institution changed its name to The First Bank.
