Farmers & Merchants Bank was established on January 5, 1907, originally under the same name. Over the years, the bank underwent several significant changes. On January 20, 1989, it changed its name to Farmers & Merchants Bank and moved its main office to 200 East Washington Street, Monticello, Florida. In a strategic expansion, the bank acquired First Merchants Bank located in Thomasville, Georgia, on January 16, 1998. After a period of growth and restructuring, Farmers & Merchants Bank ultimately merged with The First, A National Banking Association, on October 31, 2018, based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Following this merger, on January 15, 2022, the institution changed its name to The First Bank.
