Community Banks of Shelby County was established in 1892 under the name State Bank of Cowden. Throughout its history, the institution underwent several changes, including a name change to Community Bank of Shelby County on June 17, 1988, and a subsequent change to Community Banks of Shelby County on March 8, 2011. The bank relocated its main office to Main Street in Cowden, Illinois, on the same date in 1988, and later moved to 126 North Grand Avenue in Cowden on April 3, 2006. Over the years, the bank adjusted its trust powers, changing from limited trust powers in September 1980 to having none in March 2012. On September 4, 1979, it withdrew from membership in the Federal Reserve System. On September 23, 2022, Community Banks of Shelby County merged with and became part of United Fidelity Bank, FSB, based in Evansville, Indiana.
