The Commonwealth Bank, originally established as Hyde Park Co-operative Bank in 1886, began operations without Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insurance. The institution became FDIC insured on July 31, 1986. Over the years, it underwent several changes in organization and regulation. On April 19, 2001, the main office was relocated to 1172 River Street in Hyde Park, Massachusetts. In December 2008, the bank was renamed Commonwealth Co-operative Bank following its acquisition of another institution of the same name in Boston, Massachusetts. On July 21, 2011, the primary federal regulatory agency changed to the FDIC. The bank transitioned to a cooperative organization type and became a state-chartered bank, joining the Federal Reserve System on January 11, 2017.
