Citizens State Bank - Midwest was established on February 7, 1936, under the original name Citizens State Bank of Neche. Throughout its history, the institution underwent several significant changes. On March 30, 1977, the bank relocated its main office to 307 Main Street West in Cavalier, North Dakota, and simultaneously changed its name to Citizens State Bank of Pembina County. On October 1, 1999, the bank acquired Farmers State Bank of Stephen in Stephen, Minnesota, and adopted the name Citizens State Bank - Midwest. After more than two decades as an independent institution, on February 14, 2020, Citizens State Bank - Midwest merged and became part of KodaBank, with operations based in Drayton, North Dakota.
