Citizens & Northern Bank, established in 1864 as The First National Bank of Wellsborough, Pennsylvania, has a long history of growth and evolution within the banking sector. In 1971, the institution changed its name to Citizens & Northern National Bank and Trust Company after acquiring The Citizens National Bank and Trust Company of Towanda, and later adopted the name Citizens & Northern Bank in 1975. Over the years, the bank expanded through multiple acquisitions, including The Farmers National Bank of Athens in 1983, The First National Bank of East Smithfield in 1990, and several others, enhancing its presence in Pennsylvania and New York. In 2010, it acquired First State Bank in Canisteo, New York, and followed with the acquisitions of Monument Bank and Covenant Bank in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
