Citizens Bank and Trust Company

Citizens Bank and Trust Company was established in 1889, originally named The Citizens National Bank of Chillicothe. Over its long history, the bank underwent several significant changes, including a name change and various acquisitions. In 1978, the institution changed its name to Citizens Bank and Trust Company, transitioned its chartering agency to state oversight, and withdrew from membership in the Federal Reserve System. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the bank expanded its footprint by acquiring several smaller financial institutions, including the First State Bank of King City in 1987 and the First Security Bank of Brookfield in 1993. In the following decades, Citizens Bank and Trust Company continued to grow, relocating its main office multiple times, most notably to Kansas City, Missouri, in 2015. The bank acquired Summit Bank of Kansas City in 2019 and was involved in a government-assisted merger with The Columbian Bank and Trust Company in 2008. On February 25, 2023, Citizens Bank and Trust Company merged and became part of Southern Bank, based in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
