History Of Citizens Bank
Citizens Bank, originally established as The Citizens State Bank in 1923, has undergone several significant changes throughout its history. On July 3, 1940, the institution became a member of the Federal Reserve System and changed its classification to a state-chartered bank. In 1961, it withdrew from Federal Reserve membership and changed its primary regulatory agency to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The bank increased its functions by acquiring full trust powers in 1987. A major transformation occurred on January 20, 1993, when the institution changed its name to Citizens Bank. On January 25, 1999, Citizens Bank transitioned to national bank status, changed its regulatory oversight to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, and became a member of the Federal Reserve System once again. That same day, the bank's main office moved to 1500 Industrial Boulevard in Abilene, Texas, and its chartering agency was also designated as the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
