History Of BBVA

BBVA, originally established as Central Bank and Trust Company in Birmingham, Alabama, on March 2, 1964, has undergone significant transformations and expansions throughout its history. In 1973, the institution changed its name to Central Bank of Birmingham and became a member of the Federal Reserve System. By 1981, it adopted the name Central Bank of the South as part of a broad acquisition strategy that included multiple banks across Alabama. The institution was renamed Compass Bank in November 1993, signifying a new brand direction. Over the following years, BBVA expanded its footprint significantly through numerous acquisitions, including Compass Bank in Houston, Texas, and Guaranty Bank in Austin, Texas, as part of a government-assisted merger in 2009. In June 2019, the organization rebranded itself as BBVA USA. Ultimately, on October 8, 2021, BBVA merged with PNC Bank, National Association, and ceased to operate as a separate entity.
