History Of BankWest
BankWest, Inc. is a banking institution based in South Dakota, established on August 30, 1889, originally named The Pierre National Bank. Over the years, the institution underwent several name changes and structural modifications. On April 1, 1980, it adopted the name BankWest, N.A. and later changed to BankWest, National Association on January 4, 1982. That same day, it acquired Sully County Bank in Onida, South Dakota. By October 29, 1982, BankWest obtained full trust powers. The bank continued to expand its operations with acquisitions, including Badlands State Bank and Vivian State Bank on April 1, 1980, and The First National Bank of Selby on December 6, 1984. On September 29, 1986, the institution officially changed its name to BankWest, Inc., withdrew from membership in the Federal Reserve System, and shifted its chartering agency to the state while becoming primarily regulated by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). In a further expansion effort, BankWest acquired First State Bank in Armour, South Dakota, on July 1, 2016.
