BankSouth, originally established as the Bank of Cottonwood in 1928, has undergone several name and location changes throughout its history. The institution was founded on January 1, 1928, and initially operated under the name Bank of Cottonwood. On May 20, 1974, the main office was relocated to 202 North Main Street in Cottonwood, Alabama. In a significant development on May 6, 1988, the bank changed its name to Bank of the South and acquired another financial institution, the Bank of the South, in Abbeville, Alabama. This led to the main office being moved to 3251 Ross Clark Circle in Dothan, Alabama, on the same date.
