History Of Bank of Hawaii

Bank of Hawaii was established in 1897 under the original name "Bank of Hawaii." It underwent a major relocation of its main office to 111 South King Street in Honolulu, Hawaii, on January 29, 1968. Over the decades, the bank expanded through numerous acquisitions, including the takeover of Bank of Hawaii Credit Card, National Association in Phoenix, Arizona, in September 2001, and Pacific Century Bank, National Association in Los Angeles, California, in December 2001. On October 1, 1997, it acquired Hawaiian Trust Company, Ltd., and on September 30, 1998, it took over First Federal Savings and Loan Association of America in Honolulu. The bank transitioned to a state-chartered institution and became a member of the Federal Reserve System on February 22, 2002, which also marked a change in its primary federal regulatory agency. Subsequent acquisitions included First Savings and Loan Association of America in Dededo, Guam, on January 1, 2003, and Bancorp Finance of Hawaii, Inc. in April 1989. The trust powers of the bank were expanded to full status in July 1982 and again in July 1987. Throughout its history, Bank of Hawaii has played a significant role in the economic development of the region.
