History Of Bank Independent
Bank Independent, originally established as the Bank of Leighton on August 2, 1947, underwent significant changes throughout its history. On November 15, 1965, the institution changed its name to First Colbert Bank and, subsequently, on August 21, 1967, it transitioned to a national bank with a new charter from The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, becoming a member of the Federal Reserve System. The main office was relocated to 710 South Montgomery Avenue in Sheffield, Alabama, on June 15, 1970. On December 1, 1982, the bank acquired The Bank of Florence in Florence, Alabama, changed its name to Bank Independent, and shifted its chartering agency to the state level. That same day, it also expanded its trust powers to full capacity.
