Almena State Bank was established on January 1, 1934, under the name The First State Bank. The institution underwent a name change to Almena State Bank on September 19, 1994. The bank relocated its main office to Main Street in Almena, Kansas, on December 30, 1989, and later moved again to 500 Main Street in Almena on March 31, 2006, and again on November 16, 2012. On July 11, 2015, Almena State Bank acquired The Farmers State Bank located in Atwood, Kansas. However, the bank ultimately failed on October 23, 2020, and subsequently merged with government financial assistance.
