Alerus Financial is a financial institution established on September 30, 1933, originally named First National Bank in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The bank underwent several name changes, including becoming First National Bank North Dakota on April 20, 1991, as it expanded its operations through numerous acquisitions. Notable acquisitions during the 1990s included the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Fargo, West Fargo State Bank, and Northwood State Bank, all in North Dakota. In November 2000, the institution adopted the name Alerus Financial, National Association. Alerus Financial continued to grow in the following decades, acquiring several banks such as Prosperan Bank in Oakdale, Minnesota, and Beacon Bank in Shorewood, Minnesota, among others. The company significantly expanded its footprint by acquiring Metro Phoenix Bank in Phoenix, Arizona, on September 16, 2022.
