History Of A.J. Smith Federal Savings Bank

A.J. Smith Federal Savings Bank was established on January 1, 1924, originally under the name A.J. Smith Federal Savings and Loan Association of Chicago. In 1984, the institution changed its name to A.J. Smith Federal Savings Bank and also shifted its organization type to Mutual Savings Bank. The bank underwent several changes over the years, including the elimination of trust powers on April 4, 1983. On December 26, 2001, it transitioned to a Stock Savings Bank and later, on July 21, 2011, changed its primary federal regulatory agency to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Subsequently, on January 24, 2019, A.J. Smith Federal Savings Bank merged with Peoples Bank Sb located in Munster, Indiana. This merger resulted in a subsequent name change to Peoples Bank on May 22, 2020.
